Upstate New York is beautiful country — and a lot of it is wooded, overgrown, or sitting under years of brush and neglect. Whether you’ve just purchased a raw lot, inherited property, or want to expand your usable acreage, land clearing is often the first step in turning that land into something productive.
At Joe Deering Enterprises, we’ve been clearing land throughout the 518 area since 1991. Here’s what every property owner in Upstate New York should know before starting a land clearing project.
What Is Land Clearing?
Land clearing is the process of removing trees, brush, stumps, roots, and other vegetation from a property to prepare it for a specific use — whether that’s new construction, farming, a lawn, a food plot, or simply making overgrown acreage usable again.
Depending on your property, land clearing can range from light brush removal to full-scale forestry work involving large trees, root systems, and significant earthmoving.
Land Clearing Methods We Use
Not all land clearing is the same, and the right method depends on what you’re working with. Joe Deering Enterprises uses several approaches depending on the scope of your project:
Our most efficient method for most properties. A forestry mulcher grinds trees, stumps, and brush directly into mulch on-site in a single pass. No hauling, no burning, no mess. This is ideal for wooded lots and acreage where you want efficient, clean clearing with minimal ground disturbance.
For larger trees, root systems, and situations where material needs to be fully removed from the site, we use our excavator to pull stumps and roots completely. Material is then piled for chipping or hauled away.
Want to keep certain trees while removing others? We can selectively clear your property, removing specific trees or areas while protecting the ones you want to keep. This takes more precision but the results are worth it.
For properties that are overgrown with brush, briars, and small trees but don’t have major timber, brush clearing is a fast and cost-effective option to reclaim the land without the expense of full forestry work.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in the 518 Area?
Land clearing cost in Upstate New York varies widely based on the density of vegetation, the size of the area, the method used, and whether material needs to be hauled away. General ranges:

Do You Need a Permit to Clear Land in New York?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer depends on your municipality and the scope of your clearing. Here’s the general framework for Upstate New York:
- →Small residential clearing (removing a few trees, clearing brush) generally does not require a permit in most 518 area municipalities.
- →Large-scale clearing for development or near wetlands, streams, or protected areas may require DEC review or local zoning permits.
- →Properties near wetlands have additional protections under New York State law. Always check before clearing near water.
Our recommendation: call your town or village zoning office before starting any significant clearing project. We’ve worked throughout the 518 area for over 30 years and can help you understand what’s typically required in your area.
What Happens to the Cleared Material?
One of the most practical questions people ask is what happens to all the trees, stumps, and brush once they’re cleared. You have several options:
- →Forestry mulching handles it automatically — everything is ground up and left as mulch on-site. No hauling needed.
- →Pile and burn — where permitted by local regulations, material can be piled and burned. Check local ordinances first.
- →Haul away — material is loaded and removed from the site entirely. Adds trucking cost but leaves the cleanest result.
- →Wood for firewood — if you want to keep usable timber for firewood, let us know and we’ll work around that during clearing.
